Project Director, BE WiSE (Better Education for Women in Science and Engineering), a program
of the San Diego Science Alliance
As a consultant for General Atomics oversees the collaboration of scientists/engineers and teachers to create hands on teaching modules for 7-12th grade science teachers based on current research at General Atomics.
One of three founding members, and the first President of the San Diego Science Alliance, a
consortium of science related industries, institutions of higher education and research, museums, and medical health networks in support of K-12 science education.
Retired in May 2006 as Executive Director, San Diego Science Alliance, a not for profit consortium of leaders from business, higher education, scientific institutions and K-12 education in San Diego County. SDSA is committed to enhancing science literacy in K-12 education. Patricia started the BE WiSE Program of SDSA. [BE WiSE – Better Education for Women in Science and Engineering] and continued to run that program while the Executive Director of the San Diego Science Alliance. The BE WiSE Program is a San Diego Countywide program for girls in grades 7 – 12. The girls apply to the program and enter while in 7th or 8th grade. They become BE WiSE Alumnae and remain until they graduate from high school.. www.sdsa.org/BEWiSE
Patricia initiated the Education Outreach Program at the Salk Institute for Biological Studies in 1990 as part of their 30th anniversary celebration. On a volunteer basis, the scientists collaborated with science teachers to create hands on modules based on their research. Such collaboration was new in San Diego and was so enthusiastically received by educators and administrators that she continued as a volunteer at the Salk Institute to keep the program in place beyond the 30th anniversary celebration year. Three modules and a High School Science Day are still continuing today under her part-time guidance.
